Ph.D School

In the framework of CICT effort has been put into defining a formal Ph.D. program. With the NordICT network it is more appropriate to channel these efforts into the NordICT network. This program can offer training to advanced knowledge levels on: 1) ICT technologies; 2) information systems & organizations; and 3) markets, policies & regulations.

Applicants to the program should be expected to bring, by prior education, training and experience, reasonably advanced knowledge in at least one of the three areas and informed exposure to the other two. The focus of the program should be on enhancing knowledge in each of the three areas to a high level, and integrating and synthesizing this knowledge on applied issues. This focus builds directly on CICT’s established program of Master Degree studies and its direction of individual Ph.D. study.

The new program is planned as three years of study. The first will include courses and seminars designed to enhance knowledge and skills to the required level in each of the three areas of concentration, and will generally be done in residence at CICT or other universities in the NordICT network. The second year will provide seminars and directed studies to help students prepare and do background research for their multidisciplinary Ph.D. dissertations. It is expected that most students will spend part of this year at another institution. During the summer period between the first and second, or second and third years, students will be expected to participate in intensive one or two week multi-university courses for multidisciplinary ICT Ph.D. students. The third year will be devoted to completing the dissertation under the guidance of a faculty supervisor and supported by a Ph.D. advisory committee. Dissertations will involve fieldwork/prototyping in the second or third years.
